Located on a beautiful hilltop less than 20 minutes east of Sacramento on Highway 50, Red Hawk is the gamblers oasis. Red Hawk boasts magnificent views and a natural setting that inspires true gamblers. Visitors can drive 1 mile up the paved road to the stamp mill and blacksmith shops for live explanations and demonstrations by volunteers. The Red Hawk Resort + Casino delivers significant economic benefits to the local community of El Dorado County. Just outside the museum and mine are two long troughs with water and gravel for visitors who wish to learn how to pan for gold. The museum is small, but contained nice displays and informative signs. I believe the park is open daily from 10am to 4pm. Visitors are required to wear the provided hard hat inside the mine. In the museum, visitors can pay $12 to tour the mine and park. I spent about 2 hours here on a Thursday afternoon in October, and during that time, I saw maybe 8 other visitors. I'd recommend visiting during the week to avoid large crowds. The mine dead ends about 150ft later and visitors turn around and walk back to the entrance. It explains the features of the mine, the mining process, and the dangers of mining, including how explosives were used. ![]() The tour lasts about 30 min and leads into the cold, well-lit mine shaft. The site consists of a real gold mine shaft visitors can tour with an audio you download to your phone. Near Placerville, about a 15 minute drive up a hill through a residential area.
